When I told Molly that the Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays, she thought it was a bit odd. Her memories of the Fourth generally involved re-assuring terrified dogs that repeated concussive blasts were not the sound of a North Korean invasion. Since I love a good Independence Day with friends, family, watermelon, fireworks, country music, sun, and 'Murica, I was determined to show her a real Clement family celebration :)

Over the years, our 4th traditions have evolved. As a kid, we often watched fireworks in a big field with friends and food. In DC, I braved insane crowds on the National Mall and watch the big show. Recently, my family discovered the joys of watching from the side of the highway in Estacada, and this time around, Molly got to join in the fun :)

Cars for miles, and yes, that is a flag pole someone brought in their truck!

After arriving in dads' big white truck, we pulled out candy, snacks, fried chicken, beer, and set up a table for some games (Schwimmen and Catch Phrase!). As the evening sun set, the strip of grass on the side of the road filled with trucks, and people started shooting off fireworks, or setting up their camp chairs for the best view.

Sparklers!

The sights, sounds, and smells of good food, cut grass, sunsets, fireworks, and good times created an atmosphere that really is something else. As darkness closed in, anticipation built until the show started in a sudden burst of color and sound.

Fireworks!

My favorite part of the evening though is always the ride back. Jeremy started things off as we pulled the truck onto the highway -- belting out the national anthem at the top of his lungs with the windows down. Being Clements, we couldn't resist joining in (Molly even helped out!) If we weren't so loud, I'm sure we would have heard everyone else in Estacada singing along :P

I doubt we stopped singing along to Jer's awesome country playlist for the entire 40 minute car ride home. These are the kind of nights you never want to end. Already looking forward to next year ;)
